The Florida Department of Health Office of Public Health Research is pleased to present the
Florida Biomedical Research Programs legislatively-mandated 2009 annual reports. These programs offer grants through merit-based competitions to eligible Florida scientists conducting research into tobacco-related diseases and cancer.
The James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program 2009 Annual Report documents the first decade of Program achievements in accelerating the development of novel prevention,
diagnostic, and treatment approaches to address the challenges of tobacco-related diseases in the state. Since inception, the Program has awarded 188 grants totaling $79.2 million at 16 different
research institutions in the state. Gathered from the Program’s diverse portfolio of projects, the Report presents research stories and a track record of accomplishments, including additional
external research funds awarded to grantees based on their King Program research. This year’s report focuses on progress in five Program areas: behavioral research, cardiovascular diseases,

The Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program 2009 Annual Report shows how the Program, in only its fourth year of awarding grants, is helping the state’s cancer research
community accelerate its capacity to address Florida’s extraordinary cancer burden. The Report chronicles the successes of Program researchers in leveraging funding to win new awards and
demonstrates how these dedicated individuals have accelerated research through new collaborations, expanded knowledge and capacity, and increased scientific innovation at 12
