Florida Biomedical Research Programs 2011 Annual Reports Released

The Florida Department of Health is pleased to present the Florida Biomedical Research Programs’ 2011 Annual Reports. The James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program offer grants through merit-based competitions to eligible Florida scientists conducting research into tobacco-related diseases and cancer.

Tobether the Florida Biomedical Research Programs:

  • Fund the very best science proposals coming out of Florida’s many universities and private research institutes

  • Make Florida’s researchers more competitive in winning financial awards from federal research programs

  • Expand Florida’s research capacity by training new scientists and providing research instruments

  • Leverage the state’s investments to grow its technology-based economy in the biosciences and support high tech jobs

  • Employ highly effective grant funding strategies to produce results as demonstrated through performance indicators such as patenting activities, publications in respected journals, and new commercialization partnerships

  • Facilitate collaborations between talented scientists in Florida as well as across the nation and around the world

  • Allow researchers to discover breakthroughs, develop new treatments, and create innovative technologies to help save lives

The James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program 2011 Annual Report demonstrates the effectiveness of this merit-based grant Program and its results including:

  • Leveraging awards resulting in $173.5 million in non-state funding

  • ImpactImpacting health outcomes through grant awards at a total of 21 Florida institutions

  • Awarding 50 new grants valued at $19.8 million to16 different institutions in Florida
  • Increasing research progress in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, nicotine addictions, and stroke

The Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program 2011 Annual Report demonstrates how the Program is proving to be a strategic investment by:

  • LeveraLeveraging state funds by attracting nearly $119 million in non-state funding for additional research

  • Impacting health outcomes through grants at 14 different Florida research institutions

  • Employing highly effective grant funding strategies, making 41 new awards valued at $17.6 million
  • Increasing medical practitioners’ and researchers’ capacities to address Florida’s cancer challenges
